Federal prosecutors in New York have announced the arrest of two men in connection with the largest-ever seizure of counterfeit goods in U.S. history. Adama Sow and Abdulaj Jalloh were indicted this week on charges of trafficking in counterfeit goods, as investigators seized over 200,000 counterfeit luxury items valued at $1.03 billion.
According to US Attorney Damian Williams, the defendants operated a large-scale trafficking operation out of a Manhattan storage facility, where they distributed knock-off designer goods. The merchandise seized has an estimated retail value of over a billion dollars, marking it as the largest seizure of counterfeit goods in U.S. history.
Both defendants, Sow and Jalloh, are facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The investigation revealed that Sow and Jalloh were operating out of multiple locations in Manhattan, resulting in the seizure of 83,000 items worth over $502 million from the storage unit, and over 50,000 counterfeit items valued at over $237 million from an offsite location.
Ivan Arvelo, special agent in charge of homeland security investigations, praised the findings, emphasizing the unwavering commitment of HSI New York in the fight against intellectual property theft. It is illegal to purchase counterfeit goods or bring them into the U.S., and doing so could result in civil or criminal penalties.
The seizure of such a large quantity of counterfeit goods emphasizes the ongoing challenge of combating the illegal trade in counterfeit products. The successful arrest and seizure by federal authorities in New York reflect the dedication of law enforcement agencies in upholding intellectual property laws.
