Dallas Community Shaken by Deadly Shooting, 1-year-old Boy and 3 others killed

DALLAS, TX – In a tragic series of events, four individuals were found dead in Dallas on Sunday afternoon, the aftermath of a violent shooting that also left two children wounded. Later Sunday evening, the man suspected of these homicides ended his life following a police chase that concluded near Austin.

Dallas police arrived at a residence on the 9700 block of Royce Drive at around 4:20 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, authorities discovered three deceased adults, 20-year-old Vanessa De la Cruz, 33-year-old Karina Lopez, and 50-year-old Jose Lopez. Two children, a 15-year-old girl and 1-year-old Logan De La Cruz, were found injured. A 13-year-old girl at the scene was unharmed.

The young boy, Logan De La Cruz, succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital, while the teenage girl was treated and subsequently released.

The initial investigation by the Dallas Police Department led to the identification of 21-year-old Byron Carillo as the suspect. The police have yet to establish a clear motive for the killings or provide details on the relationship between the suspect and the victims.

Carillo, who was on an ankle monitor due to a previous aggravated assault charge from 2021, reportedly severed the device. He then allegedly hijacked a vehicle and fled southbound on Interstate 35.

The Texas Department of Public Safety was alerted to Carrillo’s possible flight path. Around 8:30 p.m., a DPS trooper spotted and pursued a Jeep Grand Cherokee fitting the description of the stolen vehicle. The driver, attempting to evade capture, crashed into a ditch near exit 238 in North Austin, and fled the scene on foot.

The pursuit came to a halt behind a nearby business on the southbound access road, where Carrillo inflicted a fatal gunshot wound to his head.

Law enforcement officials confirmed the suspect’s death from the self-inflicted injury. The Texas Rangers have since taken up the investigation into this incident’s full scope and Carillo’s death.
