Dartmouth College Sorority and Fraternity Charged in Tragic Student Drowning Incident

HANOVER, NY – A tragedy unfolded at Dartmouth College this summer that has resulted in charges against a sorority and fraternity members following the death of a student after an off-campus party.

The victim, 20-year-old Won Jang from Middletown, Delaware, was reported missing in July following the party. His body was later recovered from the Connecticut River by state and local emergency responders.

Authorities in Hanover, New Hampshire, where Dartmouth is situated, announced on Friday the charges against Alpha Phi for allegedly facilitating an underage alcohol house and two members of Beta Alpha Omega for providing alcohol to a person under 21.

The party held by Alpha Phi saw underage attendees provided with alcohol by Beta Alpha Omega. Tragically, after a group decided to swim in the river during a rainstorm, Jang, who could not swim and was a member of Beta Alpha Omega, was left behind and ultimately lost his life.

In response to the incident, Dartmouth took swift action by suspending both the sorority and fraternity, with the suspensions still in place. The college emphasized the importance of Greek organizations upholding their values and standards to contribute positively to the student experience.

Alpha Phi did not respond to requests for comments on the situation. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the responsibility all members of the Dartmouth community have in ensuring a safe, respectful, equitable, and inclusive environment for everyone on campus.
