Authorities say an argument about a 3-year-old child escalated into a deadly confrontation inside a western Omaha-area home.
ELKHORN, Neb. — A Nebraska woman and her boyfriend were arrested after investigators said an argument involving her young child turned violent at a family barbecue, leaving the woman’s 57-year-old mother dead inside their home.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Jennifer Neiber. Authorities accused Mason Clarke, 30, of causing her death while Samantha Neiber, 25, restrained her mother during the confrontation. Clarke faces a second-degree murder charge and an allegation of child abuse by neglect without injury. Samantha Neiber faces charges of being an accessory to a Class I felony and child abuse by neglect without injury. The allegations are pending in court, and neither defendant has been convicted.
Investigators said the gathering began Saturday, June 13, as a barbecue hosted by Clarke and Samantha Neiber at their residence in Elkhorn, a community on the western edge of Omaha. Jennifer Neiber attended the gathering, as did Samantha Neiber’s 3-year-old child. Authorities have not released a full account of the earlier part of the evening, identified other people who may have been present or said whether deputies had previously been called to the residence.
The dispute developed after Samantha Neiber put the child to bed, according to the sheriff’s account. Jennifer Neiber then began arguing with Clarke about the child. Clarke is not the child’s biological father, authorities said. Investigators have not publicly explained the grandmother’s specific concern, what was said during the disagreement or whether the argument concerned an immediate danger, a broader disagreement over caregiving or another family issue.
What began as a verbal exchange became physical, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities alleged that Clarke put a sock into Jennifer Neiber’s mouth while Samantha Neiber held her mother’s wrists against the floor. The sheriff’s account did not specify how long the physical encounter lasted, whether Jennifer Neiber lost consciousness during the struggle or what the two defendants allegedly did immediately afterward. Officials have described the death in restrained terms and have not released a complete medical finding publicly.
Deputies were sent to the residence at about 10 p.m. after authorities received a report of a suspicious death. When they entered, investigators said, Clarke and Samantha Neiber were sitting on a bed. Jennifer Neiber was on the floor in front of them. Omaha Fire Department medical personnel responded and pronounced her dead at the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified who contacted emergency services or described what that caller reported beyond the initial classification of the incident.
The sheriff’s office said investigators interviewed Clarke before taking him into custody. Officials have not released a recording or transcript of that interview. They also have not disclosed whether Clarke or Samantha Neiber gave formal statements, whether either person disputed the agency’s account or whether any other witness described the confrontation. A local report said Clarke acknowledged during questioning that an argument involving the child had become violent, but the complete context of any statement has not been made public.
Clarke was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and child abuse by neglect without injury. Samantha Neiber was arrested on allegations that she assisted in the commission of a Class I felony and neglected the child without causing injury. Authorities have not alleged that the 3-year-old suffered a physical injury. The child-related counts instead concern the circumstances in the residence and the adults’ alleged conduct while the child was in their care.
The child was removed from the home after deputies arrived and was temporarily taken to Project Harmony, an Omaha-area child advocacy organization that works with law enforcement, child welfare agencies and families. Officials have not released the child’s current placement or identified who now has legal custody. Such information is generally limited because of the child’s age and privacy interests. Authorities also have not said whether the child saw or heard any part of the confrontation.
The two defendants made initial court appearances after their arrests. A judge denied bond for Clarke, according to local reporting, meaning he was ordered to remain in custody while the case proceeds. Samantha Neiber’s bond was set at 10% of $500,000. Court authorities had not publicly announced a final resolution of either case as of Wednesday. The bond decisions do not determine guilt; judges consider factors such as the allegations, public safety and the likelihood that a defendant will return to court.
Second-degree murder in Nebraska generally alleges that a person intentionally caused a death without the premeditation required for first-degree murder. Prosecutors must still prove each required element beyond a reasonable doubt. Samantha Neiber’s accessory allegation is legally different from a murder charge and depends on the conduct prosecutors contend she committed in connection with the alleged felony. The precise prosecution theories will be developed through charging documents, court hearings and any evidence admitted in later proceedings.
Several central questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not released the final findings of a postmortem examination, a detailed timeline of the physical struggle or information about possible forensic evidence collected at the residence. Officials also have not said whether investigators recovered recordings, text messages or other communications that might provide context for the family dispute. No public statement from an attorney for either defendant was available in the reports reviewed for this article.
The sheriff’s description places the argument over the child at the center of the encounter, but investigators have cautioned through their limited release of information that the exact reason for the conflict remains unclear. The fact that Jennifer Neiber reportedly raised a concern about her grandchild does not establish what prompted the argument or whether any participant’s account is complete. Those matters could become important as prosecutors present evidence and defense attorneys challenge the state’s version of events.
The case also required an immediate response separate from the homicide investigation: protecting a 3-year-old left without the care of the two adults who had been hosting the gathering. Deputies and child-welfare partners arranged the temporary placement while investigators processed the home and interviewed those involved. Officials have released no allegation that the child was physically harmed, and the child’s name has not been made public.
Jennifer Neiber’s death was reported as one of a small number of homicides recorded in the Omaha area during the first half of 2026. That broader figure does not change the evidence required in this case, which will turn on the events inside the residence, the medical findings and the reliability of statements gathered by investigators. Prosecutors have not publicly suggested that the death was connected to any continuing threat to the wider community.
Clarke and Samantha Neiber remained subject to court proceedings in Douglas County. The investigation was continuing, and authorities had not announced additional arrests or charges. Future filings are expected to provide a more detailed account of the evidence, but the allegations outlined by the sheriff’s office remain unproven unless established in court.
