Deadly Ybor City Shooting: One Suspect in Custody, Police Searching for Others Involved

YBOR CITY, Fla. – One suspect is in custody and others are still being sought after a shooting in Ybor City on Sunday. Cellphone video taken by witnesses shows a chaotic scene as people dressed in Halloween costumes fled from gunfire on 7th Avenue. The suspect, 22-year-old Tyrell Phillips, was detained at the scene. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw stated that Phillips initially lied about his involvement, but witness accounts and video evidence led to his arrest. Phillips is now facing second-degree murder charges.

The shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, when bars and nightclubs were letting out after a busy night. Tampa police believe the incident stemmed from an argument between two groups of people that escalated into gunfire. Seventeen people were shot, with two males aged 14 and 22 being killed. Another individual was seriously injured, while five of the 15 remaining victims are still hospitalized with serious injuries. However, all are expected to survive.

Ybor City, a popular entertainment district for over a century, has unfortunately seen its fair share of gun violence throughout its history. In response, police presence has been increased in recent years, with officers stationed at major intersections on busy nights. Mayor Jane Castor emphasized that Ybor City is not to blame for the shooting, but rather it is a result of irresponsible gun ownership and poor decision-making. Castor called on gun owners to take more responsibility in securing their weapons properly and not leaving them in unlocked vehicles. One of the two handguns recovered after the shooting was found to be stolen.

Authorities believe there may have been more than one shooter and are urging anyone with information or video evidence to come forward. The Tampa Police Department has asked for tipsters to contact them or submit information anonymously through Tip 411.
