Death Sentence for Odisha Man in Double Murder Case Shocking Residents in Nayagarh District

Bhubaneswar, Odisha: A man in Nayagarh district has been sentenced to death for the gruesome murder of two individuals, including an elderly woman. The convict, identified as Niranjan Mallik from Kushadhipa village, was found guilty of the heinous crimes committed in the Odagaon area in 2019.

According to officials, Niranjan, known for his addiction to alcohol and other substances, had a history of violent acts against women in his village and surrounding areas. The tragic incident occurred on January 17, 2019, when he brutally killed a night watchman and a 70-year-old woman, while also injuring three others, including the elderly woman’s daughter.

Indubhushan Mishra, the Additional Public Prosecutor of Odagaon, shared that the court’s decision to sentence Niranjan to death was based on the testimony of 27 witnesses and various pieces of evidence presented during the trial. In addition to the death penalty, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict.

Furthermore, the court has ordered the Nayagarh District Legal Services Authority to provide financial compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased victims. This ruling aims to offer some form of solace to the grieving families who have suffered irreparable losses due to the brutal actions of Niranjan.
