DETROIT, MI – A man attending a summer pool party in Detroit faces two counts of first-degree murder after prosecutors say a fight escalated into a violent stabbing that left two people dead and two others injured.
Daiwan Lemane Hopson, 31, was arrested and charged following an August 9 incident at a residence where guests had gathered to celebrate the end of the season. Authorities say a dispute among attendees abruptly turned deadly in the home’s backyard.
Investigators report that the altercation began between Hopson and a 40-year-old man whose name has not been released. During the confrontation, Hopson allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the man several times. The confrontation quickly spilled from the backyard to the front lawn.
As other guests scrambled to intervene and break up the fight, the violence escalated. According to prosecutors, Hopson is accused of stabbing Jakirea Williams, 31, the homeowner, Martisha Payne, 25, and another 31-year-old man in the chaos. All four victims were hospitalized, but Williams and the 40-year-old male succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities say Hopson fled the scene before officers arrived, prompting a days-long manhunt. He was taken into custody on August 15 by the Michigan Department of Corrections, which confirmed he was already out on parole from a prior conviction for assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
Prosecutors have charged Hopson with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to murder. The charges were filed in Wayne County, and Hopson is now pending arraignment in Detroit. As of Thursday, his court date had not been scheduled.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office described the incident as a senseless outburst of violence that abruptly shattered what was intended as a joyful gathering among family and friends. Officials emphasized the sudden escalation of an argument into lethal force, underscoring the lasting impact on victims and their loved ones.
Detectives in Detroit continue to investigate the sequence of events that led to the stabbing. Names of the surviving victims of the mass stabbing have not been released due to ongoing legal proceedings.
Hopson remains in custody as the prosecution prepares its case. The community, meanwhile, grapples with the ramifications of the tragedy.
Autopsies are pending, and authorities are working to establish a more detailed timeline of the incident. No information was released regarding legal representation for Hopson.
