Detroit Synagogue Leader Murder: Person of Interest in Custody After Nearly Two-Month Investigation

DETROIT, Michigan – A person of interest has been detained in connection to the killing of Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll, the Detroit Police Department confirmed. The individual is the second to be taken into custody during the two-month investigation, but no arrests have been made and no suspects have been named.

Reportedly, the person of interest had no known ties to Woll, and was a random stranger according to the Detroit News. The investigation had previously led to the release of a different suspect who had been held for 72 hours.

Samantha Woll, known as “Sam” to friends and family, was found outside her home with multiple stab wounds in October. The 40-year-old was the president of Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue and had attended a wedding the night before her death. Her murder does not appear to be motivated by antisemitism according to the police.

Woll’s funeral was attended by about 1,000 people at Hebrew Memorial Chapel in Oak Park. She was remembered as an advocate for interfaith work and for her involvement in various movements, including Black Lives Matter.

The investigation is ongoing, with investigators working with the FBI to analyze forensic evidence and interview individuals with information that may aid in the case. No signs of forced entry were found at Woll’s home. The police are cautioning against making early conclusions about the motive for the attack.

Woll’s influence and impact are remembered by her colleagues, friends, and family. Her interfaith work and commitment to social justice movements have left a lasting impression, and her tragic death has deeply affected the Detroit community.
