Disabled 14-year-old South Carolina girl dies of neglect after parents leave her in crib infested with roaches and covered in feces

GAFFNEY, SC – A South Carolina family will spend decades in prison after being convicted of the abuse, neglect, and murder of a 14-year-old disabled girl. Heather Baynard died on April 11, 2022, at Spartanburg Medical Center under conditions described as horrific.

Law enforcement arrived at the Baynard residence in Gaffney, known as the “Peach Capital of South Carolina,” the day after Heather’s death. Inside, officers found appalling living conditions, including unsanitary environments laden with garbage, pests, and overpowering odors from animal waste. Two subsequent searches revealed similar findings.

At trial, it was reported that Heather, described as “medically fragile” with cerebral palsy, was subjected to shocking living conditions. Her skin bore signs of severe neglect, exacerbated by constant exposure to animal feces and filth.

Prosecutors presented harrowing evidence detailing Heather’s condition at the time of her death. Her legs were described in such a condition that they resembled raw meat, further highlighting the extreme neglect she suffered.

In May 2022, Heather’s parents, David and Bobbie Jo Baynard, were charged with her murder. Later, her brother Edward Vincent Baynard, a registered respite nurse responsible for her care, faced charges of murder and abuse relating to the home’s conditions.

Investigators from the South Carolina Enforcement Division discovered more than 40 animals in the Baynard home, many of whom were malnourished and neglected. Some were in such poor health that they had to be euthanized.

“This is the most egregious case of neglect we’ve ever encountered,” remarked Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller at the time of Heather’s passing. Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler noted the apparent neglect of Heather’s necessary care for over a year.

On Thursday, a jury convicted Heather’s parents and brother of murder, unlawful conduct towards a child, and infliction of great bodily injury. Both parents received life sentences for murder, with additional sentences for the related charges. Edward Baynard received a 30-year sentence for murder and additional terms for his other convictions, all to be served consecutively.

The severe punishments reflect the court’s intent to deliver justice for Heather, whose tragic death highlighted a deeply troubling case of familial neglect and abuse.
