Dismissal: Family of Murdered Dougherty County Man Speaks Out After Convicted Killer Walks Free

Albany, Georgia – The family of Jake Embert, a U.S. Army veteran who served almost 30 years and was tragically murdered in 2014, is breaking their silence on the recent dismissal ruling that led to the release of the woman previously convicted of his murder. Susan Embert was initially found guilty in 2019 of charges relating to her husband’s death but was recently freed following a decision by Judge Willie E. Lockett based on a violation of her right to a speedy trial.

Jake’s daughter, Rachel Embert, expressed her disagreement with Judge Lockett’s ruling, citing the prolonged delay in Susan’s trial process. The case dates back to 2014 when Jake’s death was originally ruled a suicide, prompting his family to hire a private investigator to uncover the truth surrounding his passing. During Susan’s trial, prosecutors alleged that she staged her husband’s murder to appear as suicide and attempted to poison him beforehand. Susan’s arrest followed in February of 2015.

With Susan claiming innocence throughout the trial, her lawyer Jennifer Hyman described the ordeal as incredibly difficult for Susan and her family. However, for Rachel, the dismissal of the case feels like a decade of justice being undone, as she fondly remembers her father as a humorous and kind individual. Jake’s dedication to the military saw him serving for nearly three decades, working at the Albany Marine Corp Logistics base at the time of his death.

Rachel revealed that she has been in contact with Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards, who reassured her of plans to file an appeal within the 30-day timeframe following the dismissal motion. Despite the setback, Rachel remains hopeful that justice will prevail eventually, whether in this lifetime or beyond. This ongoing legal battle continues to weigh heavily on the family as they seek closure in the aftermath of Jake’s tragic death.
