Los Angeles, California – Disney+ has opted not to move forward with the pilot for a reimagined version of the classic tale “Holes,” originally written by Louis Sachar and adapted into a film in 2003. The project aimed to introduce a new storyline with a female protagonist but will not proceed further into production.
Leading the cast was Shay Rudolph, known for her role in “The Baby-Sitters Club.” The pilot also featured notable actors Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryant, indicating strong expectations for the project.
Originally, the reboot was positioned as a key development within Disney Branded Entertainment, particularly following the receipt of tax credits designated for series production. However, after careful consideration, Disney decided the project did not meet the required standards to advance.
This new interpretation of “Holes” was set to center on Hayley, portrayed by Rudolph, who finds herself in a detention camp run by the formidable Warden, played by Kinnear. The campers, under his command, were tasked with digging holes for an undisclosed reason, a nod to the original book’s themes of adventure and mystery.
In addition to Rudolph, the cast included Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press. Alina Mankin penned the pilot, while Liz Phang was designated as the showrunner. The project had strong backing from executive producers Phang and Mankin, alongside Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles, as well as Mike Medavoy of the original film’s production team and Walden Media, which also produced the 2003 adaptation.
While this project has faced cancellation, Disney+ continues to move forward with other productions. Recently, the network has seen success with “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” which has just launched its second season and is already slated for a third.
In a further push to expand its programming slate, Disney Branded Television has greenlit a new pilot titled “Eerie Prep,” based on the children’s book series “Eerie Elementary” for both Disney+ and Disney Channel. As Disney navigates the complexities of its programming, it remains committed to delivering engaging content that resonates with audiences.
