TUCSON, Ariz. — In an ongoing investigation into the Nancy Guthrie case, retired FBI Agent Jason Pack has addressed the rigorous protocols guiding the DNA testing process, emphasizing urgency while adhering to strict procedures. The biological evidence is currently undergoing analysis at a private forensic laboratory in Florida, crucial for the Pima County, Arizona, inquiry.
While Pack does not consider himself a DNA specialist, he has acquired significant knowledge about the testing protocols throughout his career as an agent. He detailed how DNA evidence collected by local investigators is shipped to the Florida lab where technicians extract and analyze the genetic material to create a DNA profile—a numerical representation based on specific genetic markers. This crucial step is subject to a meticulous check to maintain accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
The DNA profiling process can take anywhere from days to weeks, depending on the condition of the sampled evidence. The completed profiles are not automatically sent to the FBI but rather routed back to Pima County, which retains jurisdiction over the investigation. The forensic lab in Florida, despite its expertise, must follow the procedural chain before any submission can be made to the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
After Pima County receives the DNA profile, it typically forwards it to the state crime lab for a thorough review. This review ensures that the testing aligns with FBI standards and that all documentation is accurate. “Once the state lab completes its assessment, or if Pima County requests expedited assistance from the FBI, the DNA profile may be uploaded into the national database,” Pack explained, reinforcing the methodical nature of the process.
Once in the CODIS database, the profile can be matched against DNA samples from convicted offenders and other crime scenes. However, if the suspect has never been recorded in the system, a match will not occur, complicating the investigation. Pack underscored that this careful journey from lab to database is essential, though time-intensive, allowing for thorough scrutiny at each step.
The distance between the Florida lab and an Arizona case adds layers to the already complex process. “There are multiple transitions before anything can be submitted nationally, which often means investigators should anticipate weeks rather than days for results,” he added. If every stage moves seamlessly, investigators might still face a month-long wait if Pima County opts for a full review.
Yet, Pack conveyed optimism about the progress being made. “This doesn’t indicate inactivity; rather, it reflects a careful, urgent system working as designed,” he said, highlighting the importance of following established protocols to ensure the integrity of the investigation.
As authorities continue their work in the Guthrie case, the developments surrounding DNA testing serve as a reminder of the complexity and diligence required in forensic investigations, as each step is vital in achieving justice while upholding rigorous standards.
