BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — A man charged with fatally shooting a prominent Minnesota lawmaker and her husband is being described as a doomsday enthusiast by federal authorities. According to court documents, 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter has been implicated in an attack that has shaken the local political community.
The incident occurred on a Saturday, when Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot. Boelter is also accused of seriously injuring Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, during the rampage. Law enforcement officials suggest there is evidence indicating Boelter may have had plans to target additional individuals.
Boelter’s wife disclosed to investigators that their family was part of a small group engaged in preparing for catastrophic events, a lifestyle often associated with so-called “preppers.” Following the shootings, he was apprehended in a wooded area after a two-day manhunt, providing little clarity on his motivations.
In the hours that followed the attacks, Jenny Boelter was stopped by police while transporting their four children. Documents reveal she received a troubling text from her husband, warning her to leave their home immediately. The message indicated a need to “prepare for war” and mentioned incoming threats involving armed individuals.
While her vehicle contained $10,000 in cash, a pair of firearms, and passports, Jenny Boelter has not faced any charges in connection with her husband’s actions. She described the “bailout plan” Vance had given her, outlining steps to take in the event of an emergency.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the violence as an “act of targeted political violence.” Local media reports indicate that Boelter had sent a disorganized letter to the FBI, alleging that the state governor had ordered him to kill Senator Amy Klobuchar as part of a conspiracy to ascend to her Senate seat. However, law enforcement has found no evidence to support his claims.
A list discovered in Boelter’s belongings included about 70 potential targets, with Klobuchar and Governor Walz among those mentioned. Disguised as a police officer, Boelter reportedly gained access to the homes of the lawmakers who were attacked.
Yvette Hoffman, who survived the shooting by shielding her daughter, was released from the hospital after treatment. Her husband remains hospitalized, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the traumatic event. Their daughter Hope was the one who called 911, seeking help in a moment of crisis.
As the community grapples with the repercussions of the violence, the investigation continues, raising questions about the motivations behind the attack and the dangerous ideologies that may have spurred it.
