POTOMAC, Maryland – Reality TV star Karen Huger from “Real Housewives of Potomac” has been sentenced to a year in jail for driving under the influence. The incident occurred after she crashed her Maserati into a street sign last year. As a prominent figure in the high society of suburban Washington, Huger, also known as the “grande dame,” faced consequences for her actions in Montgomery County Court.
Huger was convicted by a Montgomery County jury for the DUI incident that took place near Oaklyn Drive in Potomac. Despite being found guilty, Huger was acquitted of a reckless driving charge. Judge Terrence McGann sentenced her to two years in jail, with one year suspended, along with fines totaling $2,900 and five years of probation. Additionally, she will not be permitted to drive for a year post her release.
The sentence was based on Huger’s prior record, which included three past alcohol-related driving cases between 2006 and 2011. Prosecutors stressed her repeat offenses, with none of the previous cases resulting in jail time. A police officer’s body camera footage showed Huger struggling with balance and slurring her speech after the crash.
Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy emphasized the seriousness of driving under the influence and the need for public safety on the roads. Huger, aged 61, faced a maximum of two years in jail, with prosecutors recommending six months of incarceration while her defense team pushed for rehabilitation rather than jail time.
Following her conviction, Huger did not participate in the recent reunions of “RHOP,” instead sending a pre-recorded message announcing her decision to seek help for drinking and anti-depressant medication issues. The reality TV personality’s legal troubles serve as a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of accountability for everyone.
