CLEVELAND, OH – Ali Akram, a 52-year-old resident of Warrensville Heights, is facing sentencing today for his involvement in a May crash that left a local firefighter seriously injured. The sentencing hearing, scheduled for 12 p.m., will be presided over by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Joan Synenberg. The case stems from a collision between Akram’s SUV and a motorcycle on May 12, at the intersection of I-271 North and Forbes Road around 11:30 p.m.
Last week, court records indicate that Akram pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated vehicular assault and driving under the influence. At the time of the crash, Akram was found at the scene and identified himself as the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision. The motorcyclist involved was Ghadi Cole, a firefighter in Oakwood and Cleveland, who suffered a fractured skull and was off-duty at the time of the incident.
Authorities reported that a blood alcohol content (BAC) test showed Akram’s level at .154, nearly double the state’s legal limit. Additionally, an empty bottle of brandy and a beer can were found in his vehicle. The severity of the injuries to the motorcyclist and the circumstances surrounding the crash have led to a profound impact on the local community, prompting concern and a call for justice.
As the sentencing hearing approaches, the community is eagerly awaiting the outcome and hoping for a fair resolution that takes into account the seriousness of the offense and the impact on the victim. The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions.
