SAPPORO, Japan — A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan, prompting officials to issue tsunami warnings and evacuation advisories for coastal areas. The quake, which occurred early Tuesday morning, sent tremors through cities and disrupted public transportation and infrastructure.
Authorities reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located off the coast of Hokkaido at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers. In its aftermath, residents experienced significant shaking, with reports of damaged buildings and landslides in some rural areas. As a precautionary measure, the Japan Meteorological Agency advised people living along the coastline to evacuate to higher ground.
Evacuations affected thousands, with local government offices activating emergency response plans. Shelters were established in schools and community centers to accommodate displaced residents. Local officials urged the public to remain calm and adhere to safety guidelines while first responders assessed the damage.
Around 23 individuals have been reported injured, primarily from falling debris and minor accidents, though there have been no reports of fatalities at this time. Medical facilities in the region are on high alert, ready to treat any injured residents as assessments continue throughout affected areas.
Following the initial warnings, the Japan Meteorological Agency monitored sea levels closely to ensure no tsunami was imminent. After several hours of observation, the agency lifted the tsunami warning, reassuring residents as normalcy began to resume.
Despite the earthquake’s severity, seismic preparations and building codes in Japan have largely mitigated potential destruction. The nation, keenly aware of its vulnerability to earthquakes, has implemented rigorous safety measures over decades, contributing to lower casualty figures even in the wake of such powerful tremors.
Officials are now focusing on the recovery process, emphasizing the importance of restoring services and repairing infrastructure. With aftershocks expected, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and follow local advisories as teams work to ensure community safety.
