Elderly Man Charged with Murder in Wife’s Tragic Death

LOWER POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, PA – An 84-year-old man from Pennsylvania has been taken into custody following allegations that he brutally killed his 85-year-old wife during a dispute at their residence, according to authorities.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele announced Barton Seltmann’s arrest, stating that law enforcement responded to a call on Tuesday, where they found Margaret Seltmann deceased. Initial reports indicate a violent struggle occurred, evidenced by the crime scene at the couple’s Lower Pottsgrove Township home.

Police discovered Barton Seltmann on their back porch, his garments stained with blood. He was immediately transported to a hospital to treat an injury to his hand. The investigation conducted by local police in conjunction with Montgomery County Detectives revealed that an argument over financial matters related to their cat’s veterinary care escalated into physical violence.

Evidence found at the scene suggested that Margaret Seltmann had suffered multiple blows to the head while positioned on the kitchen floor, a determination corroborated by the county coroner’s office, which ruled the death as a homicide caused by blunt force injuries.

During questioning, Barton Seltmann recounted to investigators that his wife had brandished a knife, threatening his life, which incited him to defend himself, ultimately leading to the physical confrontation. Investigators found a knife beneath the victim’s body and remnants of a candleholder, believed to be the weapon used, nearby.

Barton Seltmann now faces charges of first-degree murder and third-degree murder and is being held without the option of bail. Family members expressed shock over the incident, noting Barton’s recent memory issues, potentially pointing towards his earlier symptoms of dementia.

Despite having shared more than three decades of marriage, Barton’s family is reeling from the sudden violence. A preliminary hearing is slated for December 5.
