LOS ANGELES – Renowned actor John Amos, known for his iconic roles in television and film, passed away at the age of 84 in Los Angeles due to natural causes. Amos gained fame for portraying the character of James Evans Sr. in the groundbreaking sitcom “Good Times,” which depicted one of television’s first Black two-parent families. The show was produced by Norman Lear and ran on CBS from 1974 to 1979.
Amos’ portrayal of James Evans Sr. resonated with audiences for its realistic depiction of an African American family facing everyday challenges. Despite critical acclaim for the show, Amos was eventually fired due to disagreements with the creative direction of the series. His character was killed off, leading to a rift between him and the show’s creators.
Following his departure from “Good Times,” Amos landed the pivotal role of Kunta Kinte in the miniseries “Roots,” which garnered critical acclaim and numerous Emmy nominations. The role marked a significant moment in his career, showcasing his talent and breaking away from stereotypical portrayals of Black characters in media.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Amos had a diverse background that included a brief stint in professional football before transitioning to a career in acting.
