Escaped Nevada Inmate Convicted of First-Degree Murder After Killing California Man: Shocking Case Exposes Prison Security Issues

CARSON CITY, Nev. – A Nevada inmate who escaped from a prison and went on to murder a man in California has been convicted of first-degree murder. Jonathan Autry, a non-violent offender serving time for counterfeit and fraud charges in Carson City, managed to escape a minimum-security work camp in March 2021. The Nevada Department of Corrections stated that Autry was able to flee because the camp lacked a secured perimeter.

After leaving northern Nevada, Autry swiftly made his way to northern California. It was there that he brutally killed 64-year-old Rocky Pastorino Sr. inside his Sacramento apartment. The motive behind the murder remains unclear, as Pastorino’s family members are unsure if there was any connection between the victim and Autry or if it was a random act of violence.

Rocky Pastorino Jr., the victim’s son, is speaking out about the incident, emphasizing his belief that it occurred due to the negligence of the Nevada Department of Corrections. In response, the family is in the process of filing a lawsuit against the NDOC.

Autry now faces a lengthy prison sentence of 25 years to life without the possibility of parole. His sentencing has been scheduled for October 27, 2023.

This case highlights the challenges faced by correctional institutions in maintaining secure facilities and preventing dangerous individuals from escaping. It raises questions about the effectiveness of security protocols and the need for enhanced measures to ensure public safety. As the legal proceedings continue, victims’ families and the public at large will be watching closely for justice to be served.
