PENN HILLS, Pa. — A routine trip to drop off two children ended with a mother and her estranged husband dead inside a crashed SUV in suburban Pittsburgh, where police say gunfire erupted during a domestic situation and relatives say the husband shot his wife before taking his own life.

Crystal Russ, 44, was driving to the 6700 block of West Barivista Drive in Penn Hills on July 28 when the encounter occurred. Allegheny County police said county 911 received a report at about 3:30 p.m. that a vehicle had crashed into a building. First responders found an adult man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds inside the vehicle, and both were pronounced dead. The man was later identified as 44-year-old William Broadus. Police publicly described the shooting as a domestic incident but initially released few details about the sequence that led to the deaths.

Russ’ relatives supplied a more detailed account in interviews with Pittsburgh-area news stations. They said Russ and Broadus had been married for about a decade and were separating. The couple shared 11-year-old twins, while Russ had two older children from before the marriage. According to relatives, Russ had gone to the Penn Hills property to drop off the twins. They said Broadus came outside while Russ remained in the SUV and shot her as the vehicle was still moving. The SUV then rolled into a nearby garage. Relatives said Broadus entered the vehicle afterward and fatally shot himself. Police have not publicly detailed every part of that family account.

The distinction between what investigators have announced and what Russ’ family has described remains important. County police confirmed that the two people were found shot in the same vehicle after the crash and said preliminary evidence placed the shooting inside the vehicle in a domestic context. Authorities also said no other injuries were reported. Russ’ relatives, however, have been the source of the public account identifying Broadus as the person who shot Russ and describing the shooting as an apparent murder-suicide. Later local reporting continued to characterize that sequence as the family’s account while the police investigation remained active.

The children were close to the center of the day’s events without being physically injured. Russ’ family told CBS Pittsburgh that the twins were at the home at the time and later went into the care of relatives. Family members said Russ’ four children became their immediate focus after the deaths. The loss left the children without their mother while the twins also lost their father. Relatives who spoke publicly emphasized that the children would need stability and support as the family dealt with the deaths and the circumstances surrounding them.

Relatives said Russ had already moved away from Broadus as the marriage broke down. They described the separation as an important part of what preceded the shooting but did not claim to know every detail of what occurred immediately before the gunfire. One cousin told WPXI that Broadus had struggled with the separation. Another relative told CBS Pittsburgh that family members had seen troubling signs in the relationship but had not expected the situation to end in a fatal shooting. Police have not publicly announced an official motive or released a complete investigative reconstruction of the encounter.

The scene initially appeared to neighbors as a crash accompanied by a series of loud sounds. One neighbor told WPXI that she heard repeated gunfire that afternoon. What first reached emergency dispatchers as a report of a vehicle striking a building quickly became a death investigation when officers and other first responders discovered the two wounded adults. The unusual combination of the crashed SUV and the people inside prompted county homicide detectives to assist. Authorities said their early findings indicated that the violence was confined to the vehicle and that nobody else was hurt.

In the days after the shooting, Russ’ relatives sought to shift attention from the violence that ended her life to the life she had built before it. Family members described her as devoted to her children and closely connected to an extended family that was trying to absorb the sudden loss. An online fundraiser organized on behalf of the family said Russ was a mother, daughter and cousin who made people feel welcome. The campaign was established to help with memorial expenses and support for her four children. By early September, it had received more than 100 donations and was approaching its stated fundraising goal.

Russ also had ties to the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center, according to local reporting. Friends, co-workers and former students later gathered at Point State Park for a memorial event honoring her. WTAE reported that people who knew Russ through her work joined family members in remembering her as an educator whose influence extended beyond her home. The gathering gave former students and relatives an opportunity to describe a side of Russ that was largely absent from the first breaking-news reports, which had focused on the vehicle, the gunfire and the police response.

Her relatives said motherhood was the central part of Russ’ life. They described her as deeply involved with her four children and said she wanted to create a more stable future as she moved through the separation. One family member also told CBS Pittsburgh that Russ had been planning to donate a kidney to her older brother, another detail relatives offered as an example of the importance she placed on family. Those accounts have become part of an effort by relatives to ensure that public attention does not reduce Russ’ life to the manner in which she died.

The family’s account has also brought attention to what relatives described as warning signs before the shooting. Russ’ aunt told CBS Pittsburgh that there had been concerns in the relationship, though relatives did not expect the situation to reach the point it did. Family members speaking to local stations framed the death as an act of domestic violence rather than a romantic response to a breakup. Their comments emphasized that separation did not justify or explain away the killing. Investigators, for their part, have remained more limited in their public language and have not released a detailed history of the couple’s relationship or announced whether police had previously been called to incidents involving them.

Police have confirmed two shooting deaths inside the crashed vehicle, the location and approximate time of the emergency call, the domestic nature of the incident and the absence of other reported injuries. Family members have identified the couple’s separation, the planned child drop-off and Broadus’ alleged actions before his death. Those details have been consistently reported by several Pittsburgh news organizations, but authorities have not publicly released a comprehensive final report that independently addresses each element.

Questions also remain about the final medical findings. Later reporting from WTAE said the Allegheny County Medical Examiner had not yet publicly released an official ruling on the cause and manner of the deaths. That means the family’s murder-suicide description should not be confused with a final public medical examiner determination. No criminal prosecution would follow if investigators conclude Broadus was the only person responsible and died at the scene, but detectives can still work to establish the sequence of events and formally close the case based on physical evidence, witness information and medical findings.

More than a month after the deaths, the publicly available reporting still centers on the same core facts: Russ and Broadus were found dead in the SUV after the July 28 crash, police identified the incident as domestic, and Russ’ family said the shooting happened as she brought the couple’s twins to the Penn Hills home during their separation. No later public report located through Sept. 8 announced a different account or a final medical examiner ruling. For Russ’ relatives, the continuing task has shifted from understanding the immediate scene to caring for her children and preserving the memory of the woman they say existed long before the violence that made her death news.
