EU and Ukraine: Gaps Remain Wide as Historic Summit in Kyiv Approaches

Leaders from the European Union are set to meet in Kyiv, Ukraine, for a historic summit on Monday. At the top of the agenda is Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, a move which has been in the works for several years.

Despite the optimism of the summit, gaps remain wide between the two sides. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his desire for Ukraine to join the EU, but the European Union has made it clear that there are no short cuts to membership.

The summit will also address the war in Eastern Ukraine, where fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists has been ongoing since 2014. The Washington Post reports that a recent strike in Kramatorsk killed three people and has raised tensions in the region.

Ukraine’s expectations for the summit remain high, and EURACTIV reports that the country is hopeful that the summit will bring them closer to their goal of joining the European Union.
