Atlanta, Georgia — Arthur M. Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, announced Saturday that former NFL MVP and CBS Sports analyst Matt Ryan has been appointed as the team’s new President of Football Operations. Ryan takes on this role immediately, tasked with leading the football division and collaborating closely with Greg Beadles, the organization’s president and CEO.
In his new position, Ryan will oversee all football-related activities, including the ongoing searches for both a head coach and a general manager. Both key decisions will fall under Ryan’s direct oversight as the Falcons aim to reshape their leadership structure.
Blank expressed confidence in Ryan’s abilities, noting his historic contributions to the franchise during his 14 seasons as a player. “Matt’s leadership and competitive nature were pivotal in shaping our success,” Blank stated. He added that Ryan’s insights from his time as an analyst would greatly benefit the team as it moves forward.
Ryan, who spent the last three years with CBS Sports, quickly accepted the role and will immediately start working on hiring the new head coach and general manager. His vast experience in the league, including a successful playing career that saw him ascend to one of the most revered quarterbacks in Falcons history, is viewed as a strong asset for the franchise.
Throughout his time with the Falcons, Ryan made a significant impact, leading the team to five playoff appearances and setting numerous franchise records, including career passing yards and touchdowns. He was also instrumental in guiding the team to its first Super Bowl appearance during the 2016 season, a year in which he earned NFL MVP honors.
“Returning to the Falcons feels like coming home,” Ryan expressed. He emphasized his commitment to building a winning culture within the organization, highlighting the importance of accountability and strategic thinking as essential to his upcoming efforts.
In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Ryan’s contributions to the Atlanta community have been substantial. He was named the Falcons’ Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee in 2016, recognizing his philanthropic efforts, particularly with organizations focused on children’s health and racial equity.
Ryan and his wife, Sarah, founded ATL: Advance the Lives, a nonprofit aimed at dismantling barriers to success for Black youth. Their advocacy and fundraising efforts have raised significant resources to foster community engagement.
As he transitions into this executive role, Ryan acknowledges that this new chapter will bring challenges. He values the guidance of experienced mentors within the organization and across the league, and remains committed to leveraging his unique perspective as a former player to usher in a new era for the Falcons.
With Ryan’s extensive background and a deep connection to Atlanta, the franchise aims to find a path to success that resonates with its loyal fan base, ensuring that both the team and the community continue to thrive.
