Rabanne was born Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo in 1934 in the Basque region of Spain. He moved to Paris in the 1950s to pursue his career in fashion, and quickly made a name for himself with his innovative designs. His iconic metal dresses and chain mail pieces were some of the most influential designs of the 1960s.
Rabanne’s work was featured in some of the most influential fashion magazines of the time, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle. His designs were also worn by some of the most famous celebrities, including Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, and Jane Birkin.
Rabanne continued to design until his death, and his work was featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in 2018.
