NEW YORK (AP) — A father and son were tragically shot and killed in their apartment building in Brooklyn, New York, in what appears to be a dispute over noise. The incident occurred late Sunday night, and police are currently investigating the case.
According to authorities, the victims, identified as 47-year-old Bladimy Mathurin and his 27-year-old son, Chinwai Mode, were found on the fourth floor of the apartment building. Their downstairs neighbor, reportedly fed up with the noise, went upstairs and allegedly shot both of them.
Marie Delilles, a witness to the incident, explained that the downstairs resident had been banging on the ceiling and expressing anger about the noise coming from the victims’ apartment. An argument escalated, leading to the suspect firing nine rounds at the victims in front of Delilles’ 10-year-old child.
The family, who originally hailed from Haiti, had recently moved to a smaller apartment, which was an adjustment for Delilles’ younger children. Noise has been an ongoing source of dispute for years.
Mickael Louis, a family friend, condemned the violence, stating, “Kids make noise all the time; it doesn’t warrant someone resorting to firearms and taking someone’s life.”
At present, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is still ongoing. Assemblywoman Monique Chandler-Waterman is providing assistance to the grieving family, who are requesting increased security. Chandler-Waterman has pledged to work with the police to ensure the family’s safety while the search for the suspect continues.
As the family copes with their loss, they are left to cherish memories of their loved ones. Delilles tearfully questioned why someone would bring a gun and cause such devastation: “My son is a good boy; he’s not violent. My husband has no gun, no weapon, why would you bring your gun to shoot my family? Why would you bring a gun to tear my family apart?”
In summary, a father and son were fatally shot in their Brooklyn apartment building, allegedly by their neighbor in a dispute over noise. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made. The family is seeking increased security with the support of Assemblywoman Monique Chandler-Waterman.
