Fatal Shooting Suspect Mario Payne in Custody for Murder of Kentucky Woman

COVINGTON, Ky. — Mario Payne, 38, has been taken into custody in connection to a deadly shooting in Covington over the weekend. He is facing charges of murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon in connection to the shooting death of Kierra Lane, 25, according to the Kenton County Attorney’s Office and police.

The shooting took place on W 34th and Graff streets, with police responding to a report of a shooting shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, officers found Lane suffering from a gunshot wound and she died at the scene. Prosecutors posted Payne’s identity and photo to their Facebook page, saying he was wanted for the deadly shooting.

Police later located Payne in Louisville and took him into custody pending the execution of his arrest warrant. According to Kenton County prosecutors, Payne shot and killed Lane in front of their children during a custody exchange. Court documents revealed the horrifying final moments of Lane’s life as she was shot multiple times while trying to close the door to protect her children.

“The last thoughts going through her head had to be the safety of her children,” said Rob Sanders, the commonwealth attorney for Kenton County. “Even though she had a gun pointed at her and being shot at, knowing her children were right in the area, had to be terrifying.”

Payne is expected to be arraigned in the coming days. He’s facing a murder charge and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted weapon.
