Flash Flood Emergency: Trapped Vehicles and Evacuations in Ruidoso – Stay Safe with KOAT App Alerts!

Ruidoso, New Mexico – Residents in Ruidoso are facing a flash flood emergency as the National Weather Service reports multiple individuals trapped in vehicles due to the rising waters along Cedar Creek. The flash flooding is occurring in areas affected by the South Fork Fire Burn Scar, prompting urgent evacuations and ongoing water rescues near the Rio Ruidoso.

Evacuations have been issued for the upper canyon area, with emergency management urging residents to seek higher ground due to unstable soil conditions and life-threatening flood waters. A shelter has been set up at the White Mountain Relief Center to accommodate those displaced by the flooding.

In addition to the vehicles trapped on Paradise Canyon Road, reports indicate that homes in the upper canyon area are being impacted by the powerful and fast-moving flood waters. Road closures, including Gavilan Canyon, Paradise Canyon, and Hall Road, have been implemented to prevent further danger to residents.

Despite recent progress in containing the South Fork Fire and the Salt Fire, which collectively burned over 25,000 acres, the flooding has heightened concerns for residents returning to the area. The FBI is currently investigating the cause of the fires and offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.

As emergency responders work diligently to assist those affected by the flash flooding, residents and visitors are advised to stay informed, follow evacuation orders, and avoid hazardous areas. The community remains vigilant as they address the aftermath of the flooding and continue to prioritize safety and recovery efforts in Ruidoso.
