Juneau, Alaska — Residents are on alert as authorities warn of potential catastrophic flooding caused by water surging from a glacier-dammed lake near the Mendenhall Glacier. As the National Weather Service (NWS) monitors the situation, local officials are urging some residents to evacuate in anticipation of rising waters.

The NWS has declared a flood warning for the region, indicating that a significant outburst of glacial meltwater is flowing into the Mendenhall River and threatening nearby homes. Warnings had been issued earlier, and by Tuesday, officials confirmed that water had started to escape the glacier’s ice dam, prompting fears of imminent flooding.

The Mendenhall Glacier, located roughly 12 miles from Juneau, is a popular destination for tourists. As water levels increased, measurements reported a rise to nearly 9.85 feet on Tuesday, well below the 14-foot threshold that signifies major flooding. However, by Wednesday morning, levels had surged past 16 feet, marking a crest.

Meteorologist Nicole Ferrin, speaking at a recent press briefing, indicated that the events unfolding could set a new record for flood levels in the region. “This will be a new record, based on all of the information that we have,” she noted, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

According to the city’s website, glacial lake outburst floods occur when meltwater, accumulating in lakes formed by melting snow and ice, breaches natural barriers and releases rapidly. The process can be likened to unplugging a bathtub full of water, leading to an uncontrolled flow of water downstream.
