Florida Hotel Employee Killed in New Year’s Eve Murder-Suicide

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A tragic shooting at a southwest Florida hotel on New Year’s Eve resulted in the death of a hotel employee at the hands of a former coworker. According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the Port of the Islands Resort was the site of the incident, which led to the deaths of both the employee and the alleged shooter.

The shooting suspect, not yet publicly identified, reportedly entered the hotel’s lobby and shot a worker before taking their own life.

Following the shooting, law enforcement evacuated the hotel and conducted a search of the surrounding area, eventually locating the suspected shooter dead in a hotel office. Witness Brandon Stearns, who was nearby on a houseboat during the incident, described the subsequent law enforcement operation as dramatic.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has yet to release the identity of the suspect, pending notification of next of kin.

The tragic event at Port of the Islands Resort on New Year’s Eve left the community in shock and mourning and marks a somber start to the new year.
