OCALA, FL – A Marion County man was handed a life sentence this week after being found guilty of a brutal murder committed during a robbery that involved lure tactics and sexual deception, authorities announced.
On Thursday, Michael Montgomery Jr., 48, was convicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, following a jury trial. The sentencing follows a violent incident that left Wayne Barlow, 40, dead and sent shockwaves through the local community.
The deadly encounter occurred in June 2023, when investigators say Montgomery and accomplice Jessica Lynn Long, 39, orchestrated a scheme using promises of a sexual rendezvous to entice Barlow to a remote area. Once there, Barlow was ambushed, attacked, and fatally shot in the head, investigators said.
Barlow’s body was discovered alongside a rural road by a passerby who initially mistook the remains for a dead animal. Authorities arriving on scene confirmed the body had significant injuries, including a gunshot wound and signs indicative of a struggle, such as bruises, a black eye, and torn clothing.
Detectives quickly identified the deceased after finding Barlow’s driver’s license at the scene. Interviews with his roommate revealed Barlow had shared plans to meet a woman the previous evening and expressed concerns that she had taken his car without returning it.
Two days after the murder, deputies located Barlow’s stolen gray Hyundai on U.S. Highway 441. When law enforcement attempted a traffic stop, the driver sped off, prompting a pursuit that ended with the vehicle ditched in a wooded area. Montgomery was eventually found hiding in water, while Long was discovered concealed in a tree nearby.
During police interviews, Long initially denied knowing about the murder. However, she later told detectives she was present during the attack and detailed a plot in which Montgomery was named as the shooter. Authorities said that when faced with Long’s account, Montgomery admitted to the robbery, explaining that the situation escalated uncontrollably.
Montgomery recounted that he and another man planned to rob Barlow while Long distracted him. The assault involved tying Barlow with a bicycle lock and physically assaulting him before forcing him into the rear of the car and driving to a secondary location.
Barlow managed to resist, provoking a violent struggle, according to the investigation. Prosecutors stated that during the altercation, Long handed Montgomery a handgun, which he used to shoot Barlow. Although Montgomery later claimed the act was self-defense, deputies reported that he did not exhibit any injuries.
Digital evidence also played a crucial role in the inquiry, with investigators referencing text messages between Barlow and Long discussing plans to meet for a sexual encounter, further substantiating the premeditation involved in the crime.
In exchange for her cooperation and testimony against Montgomery, Long is expected to receive a 30-year prison sentence. Montgomery, meanwhile, will spend the rest of his life in prison following Thursday’s conviction and sentencing.
