TALLAHASSEE, FL – A Florida couple is facing serious charges after prosecutors allege they were responsible for the death of a 5-year-old girl, who was reportedly abused in her home. The victim’s stepfather, Daniel Spencer, 35, and mother, Chloe Spencer, 23, are both charged with second-degree murder following disturbing revelations by investigators.

The investigation uncovered surveillance footage depicting Daniel Spencer engaging in abusive acts against Melissa Mogle, including forcefully pulling her arms, pushing her face into a bed, and binding her extremities. Investigators also found images of the child’s mother appearing to prepare to strike her with an object. Chloe Spencer admitted to authorities she struck the girl with a shoe.

The charges were elevated from child abuse to murder as the case unfolded, revealing the severity of the mistreatment. Further complicating Daniel Spencer’s legal predicament is his April 15 conviction for attempting to meet a minor. Despite being under scrutiny, he was released pending sentencing.

In addition, Daniel Spencer had been previously investigated by the Florida Department of Children and Families and the Tallahassee Police Department for allegations of molestation involving the child. However, no arrest was made at that time, a factor drawing sharp criticism from those close to the young victim.

Jasmine Hartsfield, identified as a godmother to Melissa, expressed her frustration over the failure of protective agencies. The system neglected a child in need, she said, pondering how these safety nets overlooked the impending tragedy.

Authorities discovered the alarming scene on May 10 in the 4100 block of Kipling Street, responding to a call about an unresponsive child. They arrived to find Melissa’s grandfather attempting to save her with CPR. Despite these efforts, Melissa later passed away at a hospital.

Initially, the parents contended that Melissa suffered from “behavioral issues,” which included holding her breath to the point of unconsciousness during tantrums. They alleged a similar incident transpired on the morning of her death, but this narrative began to unravel as evidence of abuse surfaced.

An autopsy revealed troubling signs of malnutrition alongside the visible bruises, intensifying suspicions of long-term neglect. Investigators continue to piece together the events leading to Melissa’s tragic end, committed to seeking justice for the vulnerable child.
