DELTONA, FL – A Deltona mother faces legal trouble after authorities accused her of fabricating an alibi to protect her teenage son from allegations of an assault near a local middle school.
Kayla Cobb, 33, was arrested in connection with her 15-year-old son’s suspected involvement in a violent stabbing incident on May 14.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department, Cobb’s arrest stems from allegedly providing false information to investigators in a felony case.
Her son, charged with aggravated battery, is accused of attacking a fellow student as he returned home from school. Both mother and son were detained on the same day.
Court documents show Cobb was charged with the misdemeanor of misleading law enforcement during a felony investigation. She was held at Volusia County Jail on a $500 bond, with an initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, which was later canceled. Cobb remains in custody, according to jail records.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood commented on the case in a Facebook video, highlighting how cellphone evidence contradicted Cobb’s alibi. “Her claims simply didn’t hold up under scrutiny,” Chitwood explained, emphasizing the importance of accountability in such situations.
Chitwood’s statement further denounced the actions, expressing disbelief that Cobb would allegedly attempt to shield her son from responsibility in a violent crime. “While she may have thought she was helping him, it’s everyone’s duty to ensure justice, especially in serious cases like this one,” he remarked.
Additional charges have been filed against a second suspect, a 13-year-old, who authorities believe played a significant role in orchestrating the assault. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but law enforcement revealed that the incident left the victim with severe injuries requiring medical attention.
Cobb’s son was reportedly turned over to police by his grandmother—a pivotal turn that helped unravel the case against him, according to Chitwood. The sheriff’s office highlighted the importance of community cooperation in reaching this point in the investigation.
