HOLMES BEACH, FL – A local man is facing a charge of attempted first-degree murder after authorities say he brutally assaulted his wife and left her struggling to survive more than 30 miles offshore during a Sunday morning fishing excursion.
Douglas Naeher, 60, was arrested this week following a harrowing series of events that unfolded July 20 in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Officials allege that what began as a fishing trip aboard Naeher’s 30-foot boat spiraled into a life-threatening ordeal, leaving his wife with serious injuries.
The couple, married for three years and together for six, departed from their Holmes Beach residence shortly after sunrise to fish near Bean Point. According to investigators, Naeher’s demeanor was noticeably agitated during the trip, and tensions escalated after his fishing line broke while he was casting from a bean bag chair on the vessel.
Witness accounts detailed in the arrest affidavit indicate the wife, aiming to avoid confrontation, slipped into the water beside the boat and gripped a safety rope attached to the vessel while floating on a pool noodle. As she waited in the water, authorities say Naeher untied the rope, leaving her to drift helplessly in open water.
The woman told deputies Naeher briefly motored away from her before apparently noticing a distant boat and circling back. After she managed to climb back aboard, detectives allege Naeher launched into a violent assault, repeatedly striking her in the head and stomping on her until she faded in and out of consciousness.
Investigators say the attack continued when Naeher dragged his wife by her hair to the edge of the boat and forced her into the water again. Once in the water, he allegedly attempted to strangle and drown her, all while shouting threats to end her life.
Refusing to succumb, the woman clung to the boat’s rear ladder, even as Naeher tried dragging her behind the moving vessel. She maintained her grip despite being battered and nearly submerged, believing her husband was unaware that she was still hanging on.
As the ordeal persisted, the woman was repeatedly forced overboard during attempts to re-board the vessel. At one point, she wrapped a rope around her ankle to avoid being left behind as Naeher started the boat for a second time. Finally, as the pair neared home, she summoned the strength to re-enter the boat, then leaped from it once they reached the dock to escape further harm.
Medical assessments later determined that she sustained a concussion and multiple contusions as a result of the alleged assault. Authorities apprehended Naeher, who is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.
Detectives have not released the wife’s name, citing concerns for her privacy and safety. The case remains under review by the State Attorney’s Office.
