Deputies say Jennifer Gill used soapy water, two dull knives and the victim’s cane during the March 21 assault.
OCALA, Fla. — A 45-year-old Ocala woman is accused of trying to kill her 83-year-old stepfather inside a Marion County home on March 21, telling investigators afterward that she wished the kitchen knives had been sharper, according to sheriff’s records and local reports.
Authorities say the case now centers on a blunt, close-range attack inside a family home, not a dispute between strangers. Jennifer Michelle Gill was booked on an attempted second-degree murder charge and remained in the Marion County Jail without bond. The victim survived and was reported in stable condition, but investigators described a sustained assault involving knives, a spray bottle and the man’s own walking cane. Gill’s next public court appearance was listed for April 21, putting the case into its first formal stage.
Deputies were called shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, March 21, after a reported stabbing at a residence in Marion County. By the time they arrived, the wounded man had already been driven to a hospital by his wife, who is also Gill’s mother. Investigators said the victim identified Gill as the attacker. According to the arrest account, he suffered several wounds, including seven cuts to the back of his head, injuries to both hands and another wound on his left shoulder. Gill was gone when deputies reached the home, but they spotted her walking on SE 41st Court, about 1.5 miles away, and took her into custody. During questioning, detectives said, Gill admitted she had tried “to kill him” after years of anger she could not fully explain.
Investigators said Gill described a direct, deliberate sequence. The victim was seated at a kitchen table when she entered, picked up a knife and sprayed soapy water into his eyes. She then began stabbing him, according to the sheriff’s account. When he tried to defend himself and rise from the chair, Gill allegedly shoved the table toward him and kept attacking. Records cited by local outlets say two serrated bread knives were tied to the case, including one found in the kitchen sink and another nearly identical knife seized as evidence. Gill also allegedly struck the man with his cane after the stabbing. She told detectives the knives were “very dull” and, according to the affidavit quoted by several outlets, said she wished they had been sharper. The mother told deputies she woke to the victim’s screams and found him covered in blood.
The setting added to the weight of the case. Authorities said multiple people were in the home but had been asleep when the attack began. One witness later confronted Gill outside and took away a knife and the victim’s cane before Gill walked off, according to the reported affidavit. A detective who searched the kitchen found blood around the table and red stains on a nearby chair. Local reporting also said Gill claimed the victim had hurt people and was physically abusive, yet she did not give investigators specific examples. Her mother reportedly said Gill hated the victim for reasons she could not explain. Other relatives, according to the arrest record cited by news outlets, described the 83-year-old as quiet and kind and said he had trouble moving because of a bad knee.
That conflict between Gill’s account and the statements from other family members is likely to matter as the case moves ahead. Investigators noted that the victim had no criminal record, and local reports said deputies had not identified prior abuse complaints in the materials described publicly. Gill, by contrast, was reported to have prior arrests on charges that included battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, criminal mischief, DUI, petit theft and drug possession. None of those earlier cases decides this one, but they form part of the background around an accused attacker who detectives say was willing to speak at length after her arrest, then stopped when challenged on contradictions.
The case was filed as attempted second-degree murder, a serious felony that does not require prosecutors to prove a long-planned scheme in the same way a premeditated charge would. Publicly available jail information and local reports showed Gill being held without bond after her March 21 arrest. Her next listed court date was 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 21. At that stage, the court is expected to address scheduling and the status of the prosecution as the state reviews witness statements, medical records, physical evidence from the kitchen and any recorded interview from sheriff’s investigators. The victim’s medical recovery may also shape later filings, especially if prosecutors offer more detail about lasting injuries.
For now, the story remains rooted in a domestic scene turned violent. Investigators say the attack happened in daylight, around a kitchen table, with ordinary household items turned into weapons. The victim was an older man with mobility problems, relatives said, and the woman accused of attacking him was a member of his own household circle. That contrast has given the case unusual force. Police accounts describe not a sudden scuffle but an assault that moved from blinding spray to stabbing to blows with a cane. The victim survived, and that fact now defines where the case stands: a living witness, a hospitalized family elder, and a defendant awaiting her next hearing in a Marion County courtroom.
The case remained open as of April 15, with Gill jailed without bond and a court appearance listed for April 21. The next milestone is whether prosecutors add detail in open court about evidence, injuries and any formal defense response.
