Gondomar, Portugal – Footballers and fans from across the globe gathered to pay their respects to Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident earlier this week in Zamora, Spain. The 28-year-old Liverpool forward, traveling back to England for pre-season training after recent minor surgery, was accompanied by his brother, Andre Silva, a professional player for Penafiel, who also perished in the crash.

The funeral service took place at the Chapel of Resurrection, situated on the outskirts of Porto, attracting fellow players, coaches, and admirers. Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, along with defender Andy Robertson, honored Jota and Silva by carrying wreaths emblazoned with their jersey numbers, 20 and 30. Former Reds captain Jordan Henderson was also among the mourners.

Teammates from the Portuguese national squad, including Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, attended the service, having recently played in the Club World Cup in Florida. They were joined by a contingent of notable players, such as Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Jose Sa, who came to pay their respects.

Coaches from both club and country were present, including Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot and Jota’s national coach Roberto Martinez. Also in attendance was Nuno Espirito Santo, Jota’s previous head coach at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The outpouring of grief highlighted the profound impact Jota had on the football community.

In the previous season, Jota’s contributions were pivotal in securing significant titles for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team. He celebrated victories in the Premier League and the Nations League while recently marrying Rute Cardoso in his native Porto. The couple share three children.

An online book of condolences was established by Liverpool, allowing fans and former teammates, including Henderson, to express their condolences at Anfield. Slot and former manager Jurgen Klopp, who initially signed Jota from Wolves, both expressed their shock and sorrow following the tragic news. Slot recalled the “unimaginable loss,” praising not only Jota’s skills on the pitch but also his character off it. Klopp described himself as “heartbroken.”

Messages of sympathy poured in from across the football world, including tributes from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prince William. Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s all-time third-highest goalscorer, shared feelings of fear about returning to training without his teammate.

Jota leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having scored 65 goals and provided 26 assists in 182 appearances for Liverpool, contributing to their FA Cup victory in 2022 and two Carabao Cup wins. His journey in football began when he joined Liverpool in September 2020 after playing an essential role in Wolverhampton’s promotion to the Premier League, scoring 17 goals in their title-winning campaign.
