Former NFL Player Sergio Brown Arrested in Connection with Murder of Mother

Former NFL player Sergio Brown has been arrested in connection with the murder of his 73-year-old mother, according to his family and police. Brown, who played as a safety for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, was taken into custody by San Diego police after a warrant was issued for first-degree murder. He will be extradited to Illinois to face charges, as confirmed by the Maywood Police Department. An attorney for Brown’s family also acknowledged his arrest.

Brown had been missing for almost a month after the body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, was discovered on September 16 near a creek behind her home in Maywood, a Chicago suburb. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office determined that she had suffered “multiple injuries due to assault.” After reentering the United States from Mexico, where he had been evading authorities, Brown was apprehended by Maywood police.

During his time on the run, videos emerged on Instagram showing a man resembling Brown dismissing reports of his mother’s death as “fake news.” In one video, the man claimed he believed his mother was on vacation in Sinaloa, Mexico. TMZ also obtained videos of a man they identified as Brown partying in Tulum, Mexico.

Sergio Brown, an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame, played in the NFL for seven seasons, representing teams such as the Patriots, Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville Jaguars. This remains an ongoing investigation, and updates will be provided in due course.
