The New York Times reported that McGonigal was charged with money laundering and taking money from a former foreign agent. According to ABC News, McGonigal was arrested for his ties to Deripaska, a Russian oligarch and close ally of President Vladimir Putin.
The Washington Post reported that the FBI’s counterintelligence agent was accused of helping Deripaska avoid US sanctions. Anadolu Agency | English added that a British citizen was also arrested in Spain in connection with the case, accused of helping Deripaska dodge sanctions.
