GRAFTON, WI – A routine afternoon turned violent in a Grafton neighborhood Friday when a man allegedly shot his wife during an escalating domestic dispute, as police moved in to intervene.
Authorities say Guy Paider, 53, is in custody facing charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety after a confrontation with his wife led to gunfire inside their home. Records indicate Paider is being held at the Ozaukee County Jail.
The incident unfolded just hours after Paider’s wife met with a lawyer to continue discussions about her pending divorce from her husband, according to information relayed to investigators. Upon her return home, Paider reportedly pressed her for details about the divorce, but she declined to discuss the topic in front of their child.
Once their child was sent to another room, tensions between the couple escalated. Investigators report Paider then physically attacked his wife, who called out for help. As the confrontation moved into their bedroom, she told police he pulled a handgun from a nearby drawer.
Documents reveal that as the situation intensified, Paider demanded his wife look at him before allegedly threatening to shoot. At the same time, responding officers from the Grafton Police Department were arriving at the residence after being alerted to the emergency.
After entering the home, officers could hear the woman pleading for assistance. As they moved towards her voice, Paider allegedly fired several shots, wounding his wife. Police say the shooting happened just as authorities approached the room.
The 48-year-old victim suffered critical injuries, prompting first responders to airlift her to a Milwaukee hospital for emergency care. She was later reported to be in stable condition.
No police officers were injured during the ordeal, officials confirmed. The child present in the house at the time was unharmed, according to initial reports.
Following the shooting, Paider was taken into custody without resistance. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining details of the couple’s recent disputes and the events leading up to the alleged attack.
Paider is a former West Allis firefighter, a community located just outside Milwaukee. The circumstances surrounding the case have drawn attention to the challenges law enforcement faces when responding to domestic violence situations on short notice.
Court proceedings for Paider are expected to begin in the coming days as the Ozaukee County District Attorney weighs the evidence gathered in the case.
