Fugitive Captured After Eluding Police for Weeks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Christopher Haynes, a 30-year-old escapee, was recaptured by law enforcement after managing to elude capture for nearly two months. Notably, he had escaped from officers while wearing a single shoe and with handcuffs attached to one wrist.

Haynes, who was initially arrested in Manassas, Virginia on September 6 for the alleged fatal shooting of Brent Hayward, 33, earlier in August, had been taken to a hospital near George Washington University following complaints of ankle pain. During the hospital visit, he assaulted an officer and made his escape after an officer momentarily released one of his handcuffs.

Subsequent to his escape, footage revealed Haynes sneaking through residential areas, scaling fences, prompting George Washington University to initiate a brief lockdown. The extensive search culminated with Haynes’ re-arrest in an Oxon Hill, Maryland apartment. Although he initially attempted to flee, he ultimately surrendered, likely due to the overwhelming law enforcement presence.

Haynes’ recapture was a collaborative effort, involving members of the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force, D.C. police, and the FBI, who had even set forth a substantial reward for information leading to his capture. The sum of the reward began at $10,000 and later tripled, although it remains uncertain if any individual will claim this reward.

Beyond this recent series of events, Haynes had previous encounters with the law, particularly with assaults on law enforcement. Reports indicate that in September 2020, Haynes had attempted to strike three Prince William County officers with a vehicle. He subsequently pled guilty to multiple charges related to the incident, serving a portion of his sentence and then entering probation.
