BIENVILLE PARISH, LA – After 32 years on the run, a Louisiana fugitive was apprehended in Mexico this week. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released footage of the arrest, showing the fugitive, Greg Lawson, laughing as he was being handcuffed.
Lawson, now 63, fled the country before a jury convicted him of attempted second-degree murder in 1991. The FBI’s New Orleans branch received a tip that led to his capture, according to federal officials.
The FBI shared a video from the Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Office on Thursday night. The footage shows Lawson, escorted by authorities at an airport, chuckling just before an officer handcuffs him. This arrest comes more than three decades after he absconded from the United States.
The FBI New Orleans branch announced the end of the long search for Lawson on social media. “This morning, 63-year-old Greg Lawson is back in a Louisiana jail awaiting action by Bienville Parish authorities,” the agency posted.
Lawson was located and arrested in Huatulco, Mexico on Tuesday. The FBI’s Shreveport and Mexico branches collaborated with FBI Headquarters and immigration authorities to locate Lawson and deport him for immigration violations.
In 1991, Lawson was accused of attempting to shoot Seth Garlington following a dispute at a gas station. Garlington survived the attack, but Lawson fled before the jury could convict him of attempted second-degree murder.
The FBI initiated a search for Lawson in May 1991, following up on various tips and reported sightings over the years. From the outset, the FBI suspected that Lawson had escaped to Mexico.
Douglas A. Williams Jr., the special agent in charge of FBI New Orleans, expressed gratitude to the public and their partners in this case. “There is no doubt that Mr. Lawson might still be in the wind if our partners in Mexico had not been willing to deal with this so swiftly,” he said.
Earlier this year, another individual from the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list was also apprehended in Mexico.
