Brush Fire Threatens Homes in Corona, Prompting Evacuations
CORONA, Calif. (AP) — A dangerous brush fire known as the Gavilan Fire was rapidly spreading near Corona on Saturday, putting homes in jeopardy as firefighters battled to contain the flames.
The blaze, which started around 3:30 p.m. in the Gavilan Hills community near the intersection of Gavilan and Idaleona roads, has already consumed approximately 250 acres of land. As of 9 p.m., firefighters have managed to achieve 25% containment.
To ensure the safety of residents, an evacuation order was initially issued but has since been downgraded to a warning for the area east of Norbert Street, north of El Nido Road, west of Lee Road/San Jacinto, and south of Gustin Road. The affected area includes numerous homes and ranches, posing a threat to both humans and livestock.
Evacuees have been directed to seek shelter at Martin Luther King High School located at 9301 Wood Road in Riverside. In addition, the Riverside County Department of Animal Services is accepting both small and large animals at their shelter on 6851 Van Buren Blvd. in Jurupa Valley.
Firefighters have been actively combating the fire by utilizing aerial resources, including planes and helicopters, to drop fire retardant in an attempt to halt the spread of the flames through the thick brush.
According to CalFire, by Saturday evening, the fire’s “forward rate of spread” had been successfully halted.
