POWDER SPRINGS, GA – Authorities say a 31-year-old man called police to report fatally shooting his mother and stepfather inside their suburban home shortly after the couple returned from a birthday outing. The deadly incident unfolded late Wednesday evening in a quiet Cobb County neighborhood, shocking residents and leaving the community grappling with the loss.
According to police, Martin Duberry allegedly waited for his mother, 72-year-old Monica Brookins, and stepfather, 73-year-old John Wells, to arrive home before opening fire. Investigators say Duberry later confessed to officers that he killed both victims because he was “tired of them and just wanted to be alone.”
Responding officers found Brookins and Wells suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The two were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Police described the violence as a targeted, domestic situation, emphasizing there was no ongoing danger to the public.
Court records reveal that Duberry was charged with two counts of felony murder, as well as eight counts of aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. An arrest warrant details that during questioning, Duberry was unable to recall exactly how many times he shot each victim, stating that initial shots were aimed at their heads.
Neighbors said Duberry had been living with the couple for some time. Residents described Brookins and Wells as friendly and welcoming, often seen waving and greeting others in the neighborhood. One long-time friend expressed disbelief and sorrow, noting that the couple had opened their home to Duberry.
The motive for the killings appears to hinge on statements Duberry made after the incident, telling officers he was frustrated by the presence of his mother and stepfather. Police say there was no indication of ongoing conflict prior to the shooting, making the attack even more perplexing for those who knew the family.
Witnesses recounted seeing a heavy police presence after the 911 call. One neighbor recalled watching Duberry emerge from the house with his hands in the air, surrounded by officers with weapons drawn. The typically quiet street was quickly cordoned off as investigators processed the scene.
Autopsy findings indicate that Brookins was shot five times, while Wells suffered three gunshot wounds. Investigators are still examining the sequence of events leading up to the shooting and whether any warning signs preceded the violence.
Police continue to interview neighbors and collect evidence as the investigation moves forward. Duberry remains in custody pending a court appearance. No other family members were reportedly present at the time of the shooting.
Friends and neighbors are now mourning the couple, describing them as kindhearted and quick to offer a smile or a helping hand. The case remains under active investigation, with authorities urging anyone with additional information to contact local law enforcement.
