Geneva, Switzerland — A significant glacier collapse in the Swiss Alps unleashed a torrent of ice, mud, and rock on Wednesday, devastating the village of Blatten, which had already been evacuated due to rockslide risks. This unforeseen event buried much of the village, leading local authorities to report that one person remains unaccounted for.

Drone footage aired by Swiss public broadcaster SRF revealed a scene of destruction, with vast areas of the village hidden under a thick layer of debris. The river that once flowed through Blatten and the verdant sides of the valley have been consumed by the landslide.

Matthias Bellwald, the village mayor, addressed the media, expressing the community’s loss. “We’ve lost our village,” Bellwald stated. “The village is under rubble. We will rebuild.” Local official Stephane Ganzer confirmed that nearly 90% of Blatten has been affected by this catastrophic event.

Matthias Ebener, a spokesperson for the Valais canton, noted the sheer volume of material dislodged, describing an “unbelievable amount” of debris cascading into the valley. While the missing individual’s details remain scarce, emergency services have emphasized recovery efforts.

Authorities reported that millions of cubic meters of rock and soil have fallen since the village’s evacuation earlier this month, a precaution taken when geologists detected instability in the mountainside. As the glacier’s collapse became apparent, a substantial cloud of dust and debris escalated, marking a terrifying moment for residents captured in video footage circulated online.

Experts believe the recent warming trends linked to climate change may have intensified conditions, although they caution that factors influencing the collapse are complex. Christian Huggel, a climate and environment professor at the University of Zurich, stated that while many variables were involved, rising temperatures have been detrimental to local permafrost. This thawing is critical, as it affects the stability of mountain rocks, heightening the risk of events like the recent landslide.

The destruction in Blatten is unprecedented, with no comparable incidents recorded in the Swiss Alps in recent centuries. The devastation has left a visible scar on the landscape, evidenced by wrecked buildings amid the debris.

In light of this disaster, Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed her support for the community. Emergency services have declared the area hazardous, urging the public to steer clear and reinforcing the closure of the main road leading into the valley.

“It’s terrible to lose your home,” stated Keller-Sutter on social media, resonating with the sentiments of the affected residents as they confront the recovery and rebuilding ahead.
