Google employees are speaking out against the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, after his response to the introduction of ChatGPT, a rival to Google’s own artificial intelligence-based chatbot.
The criticism follows a statement from Pichai in which he called ChatGPT a “dumpster fire,” and warned that it could lead to “horrible mistakes” and “fictitious answers.”
The backlash has been swift and intense, with tech leaders from Google search boss Prabhakar Raghavan to Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak warning that AI bots like ChatGPT can make mistakes that go unnoticed.
In response to the criticism, Google is now reportedly working to bring its own AI chatbot, Bard, to ChromeOS. However, many of the company’s own employees have been mocking the effort, suggesting that Google is playing catch-up to its rival.
The criticism of Pichai’s response to ChatGPT is yet another example of the company’s employees speaking out against its leadership. It remains to be seen how Google will respond to the backlash, and whether or not the introduction of Bard will be enough to appease its critics.
