PORTLAND, Oregon – A Multnomah County grand jury has determined that three Portland Police officers were justified in shooting and killing PoniaX Kane Calles in 2023, after he shot and killed a security guard at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center.

The fatal shooting occurred after Calles, also known as Reginald Kane Jackson, hitched a ride to Gresham from a homeless man who was unaware of Calles’ actions at the hospital. Calles had a history of violence, including abusing his partner and their daughter, and had previously been the subject of a restraining order.

The grand jury’s decision, announced by Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, means that the officers’ use of force was found not to be criminal under Oregon law. Calles’ partner, Ashley Heil, had previously filed court documents detailing his “anger problems” and requesting that he be prohibited from owning firearms.

In addition to the fatal shooting of the security guard, Calles had also threatened hospital staff and injured another employee. As a result, Legacy Health announced plans to increase security at all of its locations following the tragic events at the Good Samaritan Medical Center.
