ANCHORAGE, AK – An Anchorage man who claimed demonic possession led him to fatally stab his daughter and her dog was sentenced to spend the next several decades behind bars. Armando Velador-Padilla, 50, was sentenced to 60 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, following his conviction for second-degree murder and animal cruelty.
The tragedy unfolded on April 23, 2021, when Velador-Padilla, driven by hallucinations and delusions, believed he needed to “kill the devil” he thought resided in his daughter, 22-year-old Darla Velador. The violent act also resulted in the death of her dog, Max.
Despite being diagnosed with schizophrenia, Velador-Padilla was deemed competent to face trial. Prosecutors highlighted his ongoing mental health issues, noting that his condition was resistant to medication and he had a history of not following medical advice, even while imprisoned.
Darla Velador was remembered fondly in her obituary, with tributes describing her as a loving young mother who significantly impacted the world around her.
She graduated from Burchell High School in 2016, balancing her studies with the responsibilities of motherhood.
Her obituary painted a picture of a creative and compassionate spirit, noting her passions for art, music, and helping others. Her rescue dog Max, who also lost his life on that tragic day, was among her cherished companions.
Adam Mokelke, who served as principal at Burchell High School, expressed his sorrow at the news, reflecting on Darla’s determination to complete her education while raising a child. He praised her vibrant personality and shared his concern for her surviving son.
The court’s decision underscores the serious threat Velador-Padilla posed due to his mental health issues, balancing community safety with the acknowledgment of his personal struggles with mental illness.
