Fukuoka, Japan — CyberConnect2 has unveiled its latest project in the iconic .hack series, titled hack//Z.E.R.O., marking a significant milestone in the franchise’s evolution. A decade in the making, the game promises to deliver an engaging action RPG experience developed and published independently by CyberConnect2, with approval from their long-time partner, Bandai Namco Entertainment.
Though specific platforms and a release date have yet to be disclosed, initial insights reveal that the game aims to rejuvenate the beloved .hack universe. According to the studio, this title represents a fresh creative direction, allowing CyberConnect2 full control over project oversight, from planning to launch.
Renowned violinist Taro Hakase is contributing original music to hack//Z.E.R.O., enhancing the game’s emotional depth. This installment aspires to blend the series’ familiar themes of fantasy and reality, while also appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers. “This world is at ‘Dusk,’ it matches with us so well,” a studio representative hinted, hinting at the game’s thematic elements.
The .hack series has enthralled gamers since its debut more than two decades ago. It uniquely intertwines narratives in a virtual MMORPG known as “The World,” where players navigate both real-life scenarios and in-game adventures. This new entry, set approximately ten years in the future, will again focus on the MMORPG’s intricacies, but with an enriched portrayal of real-life drama. Unlike previous games constrained by budget limitations, hack//Z.E.R.O. is positioned to fully explore the real-world impacts of its story.
Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO of CyberConnect2, explained that the title signifies a “restarting from zero,” distinguishing it from existing works within the universe. He emphasized the ongoing exploration of duality, expressing that the game will showcase the contrast between public persona and true feelings, mirroring reality’s complexities.
Gameplay will feature both action and adventure elements, created by a team of seasoned veterans and emerging talent. While a teaser trailer has been released, it contains no gameplay footage, leading observers to anticipate further details in the coming months.
As part of CyberConnect2’s 30th-anniversary celebrations, an upcoming issue of Weekly Famitsu will devote a special feature to the studio, including insights into their forthcoming title, CECILE, which is part of the “Trilogy of Vengeance” series.
Fans can look forward to the hack//Z.E.R.O. teaser trailer, which has already captured the imagination of gamers eager for this new development in a beloved franchise. As the project progresses, anticipation builds for a release that promises to blend nostalgia and innovation seamlessly.
