Heat Wave Sparks French Fire Threatening Mariposa in Yosemite

Mariposa, California is facing a dangerous heat wave fueling new fires throughout the state. The French fire, threatening the town outside Yosemite National Park, erupted on the Fourth of July amidst scorching temperatures and gusty winds. Meteorologists are warning that the extreme heat is expected to persist in California, increasing the risk of more wildfires in the coming days.

By Friday morning, the French fire had already burned 843 acres and was moving southeast toward Mariposa. Evacuation orders were in place for almost 200 homes, affecting over 300 residents. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze, constructing fire lines around the eastern side of Mariposa to protect the community.

Despite efforts to contain the wildfires, the oppressive heat is expected to linger, posing challenges for residents and firefighters alike. Cooling centers have been opened in Los Angeles to provide relief for those struggling in the extreme temperatures. The Office of Emergency Services has activated the State Operations Center in response to the heat warnings throughout the state.
