Georgetown, Kentucky — Toyota is redefining its SUV lineup with the debut of the all-electric 2027 Highlander, marking the automaker’s venture into the realm of electric three-row vehicles. This new model replaces the aging fourth-generation Highlander that has been on the market since 2019. The company aims to appeal to environmentally conscious buyers while maintaining its signature capability and style.

The Highlander EV showcases a fresh exterior design along with a completely overhauled interior adorned with the latest technology. Most notably, this model transitions entirely to electric power, representing a significant step for Toyota as it enters the competitive electric vehicle space.

Toyota will offer two variants of the Highlander EV: the XLE and the Limited model. The base XLE features a 77.0-kilowatt-hour battery, capable of delivering up to 287 miles of range when outfitted with a single motor that produces 221 horsepower. For buyers seeking more power, the XLE AWD configuration boosts output to 338 horsepower, albeit with a reduced range of 270 miles. Additionally, the Limited model comes standard with an all-wheel-drive system and offers the option of a more robust 95.8-kWh battery, extending the range to 320 miles.

Both variants of the Highlander EV come equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, ensuring compatibility with a variety of charging networks. Moreover, the vehicle boasts vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, allowing it to provide power to external devices or serve as an emergency energy source.

Visually, the new Highlander makes an immediate impression with its sharp lines and bold fenders, highlighted by full-length LED daytime running lights and Toyota’s iconic “Hammerhead” headlights. Inside, the vehicle embraces innovation with a 14.0-inch central touchscreen equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional features include personalized ambient lighting with 64 color options, extensive device charging capabilities in all three rows, and an optional panoramic sunroof, the largest available in Toyota’s lineup.

Comfort is not overlooked in the Highlander EV, as SofTex faux leather is standard throughout the cabin. Heated front seats are included, while second-row heating is available as an add-on. Cargo space remains versatile, with the third row folding completely flat to provide up to 45 cubic feet for storage behind the second row.

Safety features continue to be a focal point for Toyota, with the new Highlander equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0. This suite includes advanced driver-assistance features like pre-collision alerts, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure assistance, ensuring both drivers and passengers enjoy peace of mind on the road.

Production of the 2027 Highlander EV will commence in late 2026 at Toyota’s facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, with batteries sourced from a new manufacturing plant in North Carolina. While the exact pricing details are still forthcoming, it is anticipated that the base model will start around $48,000.
