Honduras has officially cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established relations with China, prompting strong reaction from Taiwan’s government and their allies. The move was announced on Monday, as Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez inaugurated a new embassy in Beijing. The decision by Honduras, which received $30 million in aid from Taiwan in 2017, is seen as part of China’s ongoing efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically. Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, has criticized China’s “dollar diplomacy” in the past and called on other democracies to support Taiwan’s sovereignty. The United States has also warned that China’s promises to countries can often be empty, as in the case of Honduras. The switch in established relations could signal increasing pressure for Taiwan as China continues to strengthen its global influence.
