Husband shoots estranged wife’s new boyfriend outside Pennsylvania Planet Fitness

MOUNT PLEASANT, PA – A man is behind bars on attempted homicide charges after authorities say he shot his estranged wife’s boyfriend in the parking lot of a Mount Pleasant gym on Tuesday afternoon, then fled the scene in broad daylight.

Steven Heald, 38, is accused of confronting his wife’s new partner around 1 p.m. in the parking lot of a popular fitness center at Crossroads Plaza. According to investigators, the two men exchanged words before Heald allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire, striking the victim multiple times.

After the shooting, witnesses told police that Heald stood over the wounded man and assaulted him further before returning to his vehicle and driving away. Law enforcement later traced the suspect’s escape route toward Connellsville, located less than 10 miles from the site of the attack.

First responders arrived to find the victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his shoulder, hip, buttocks, and thigh, as well as lacerations to his face, hands, and head. Emergency personnel credited a nurse who happened to be at the gym for providing life-saving aid before paramedics arrived.

Officials say the victim’s survival was largely due to the immediate medical attention he received inside the crowded parking lot. Without that swift intervention, they believe the outcome could have been far more dire.

Police investigators quickly identified Heald as the suspect, based on statements from the victim and several bystanders, in addition to surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Authorities also linked the black Ford pickup truck used in the escape to Heald’s address.

As officers moved to locate the suspect, they received word that Heald had surrendered himself at the Connellsville Police Department’s headquarters. At the time of his arrest, Heald reportedly had blood on his shoes and cuts on his knuckles, but his clothing was otherwise clean.

According to officials, the motive for the attack appears to be connected to a personal dispute. Investigators learned that the suspect’s estranged wife had been in a relationship with the victim, and while the men had previously spoken both in person and by text, there had been no violent history reported between them before.

Heald now faces multiple charges, including attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and misdemeanor stalking. He was denied bail and remains in the Westmoreland County Prison.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, is expected to recover from his injuries. Authorities say their investigation is ongoing, as they review additional witness statements and video evidence from the scene.

Heald made an initial appearance in court for a preliminary arraignment the same day as the incident. He is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 21.
